The Story

A true piece of 90s motocross history, pulled back from the dead. This 1993 Honda CR500 was found neglected and beat up on Facebook Marketplace in Rhode Island, then hauled back to a humble home garage in Connecticut. It was torn down to the bare frame, and every single part was gone through. If a part could be saved, it was restored. If it couldn't, a replacement got tracked down.

The frame was welded and powdercoated. The front end was completely stripped, all to find out it was off an older 1990 model. The wheels were fully rebuilt with fresh Cerakoted hubs, bearings, spokes, and rims. The swingarm, fork tubes, and shock body were brushed out by hand and clear coated with Cerakote MC5100. A lot of the hardware on a bike this old isn't made anymore. Hardware like the axles were brushed, blasted, and Cerakoted piece by piece, while all the other hardware replaced with fresh zinc coated hardware.

The engine looked like it came out of the bottom of the ocean. There were metal shavings in the oil, a clutch cover patched with JB Weld, and a cracked case. The cases were blasted, welded, and Cerakoted and the cylinder was bored to fit a fresh Wiseco piston kit. The carb, radiators, air box, plastics, seat, and exhaust were all restored beck to their original 1993 look.

All of it was done at home with a handheld sandblaster, a toaster oven, a bench buffer, and Pryme MX wheels, proving you don't need a fancy shop to bring something like this back.

This build started after the 1999 KX250 build. Once that bike was finished, the next question was how far a build like that could go. Every step was filmed on YouTube, from the day it came off the trailer to the first time it fired.

Along the way the parts hunt turned into its own project. A lot of the parts for a bike this old just can't be found anymore. So when a part didn't exist, it had to be made. The front wheel hub cover, throttle body cover, swingarm caps, and brake line guides were designed from scratch and 3D printed.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, making parts for this bike turned into the start of Flow One as a motorcycle company.

This CR500 was built to be given away, all to see if the challenge was possible. And after everything, I'm here to say that it was.
